Nayib Bukele, the president of El Salvador, initially proposed the notion of adopting Bitcoin as legal tender in June 2021 during the Bitcoin 2021 Conference in Miami. He expressed his desire for this move to serve as a catalyst for the country’s economic development.
A few days later, a resolution called the Bitcoin Law was approved by a majority of lawmakers. In September 2021, El Salvador made history by becoming the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. This elevated Bitcoin to the same level as the US dollar, which replaced the El Salvador Colon (SVC) in 2001.
